About Jeannette
Irish music artist Jeannette Byrne releases her third album ‘ Women Of The One World ’ internationally on 27th March 2020 . Women Of The One World is a concept album which hosts a collection of covers from influential female artists of the 1960s and 1970s, many of whom continue their great work today. With songs from Buffy Sainte Marie, Joan Baez, Sandy Denny, Judy Collins and Laura Nyro, Jeannette Byrne draws inspiration from women who put themselves at the forefront of progressive movements. An established performer of the French chanson on sold out stages across Europe, Jeannette has also performed widely across Irish national television and radio. In 2005, Jeannette Byrne’s first EP ‘Une Femme’ was voted one of the top 5 records of the year by The Irish Times.
Inspired by the centenary marking 100 years of women having the right to vote, Jeannette Byrne began to think about the female singers who had championed humanitarian causes throughout her life.
The album cleverly links tracks from these female artists together in a compelling way, a breath of fresh air in the vacuous singles market we know today. Songs from these powerful female voices are played by a 40-piece orchestra thanks to arrangements from Cian Boylan. Jeannette’s collaboration with Cian Boylan comes amid his recent success arranging songs for Sinead O’Connor at Feile 2019, receiving millions of YouTube views after they were performed on The Late Late Show.
At a time with resurgent global unrest, Jeannette Byrne hopes these songs will find their way to inspire a new generation of listeners. Timeless American songs like Buffy St Marie’s Oscar winning ‘Up Where We Belong ’ and Joan Baez’s ‘Love Song To A Stranger’ are at home on the same record as the UK’s Sandy Denny and her classic ‘ Who Knows Where The Time Goes’. Jeannette Byrne captures their universal language of music with fresh takes and twists all round.
Jeannette comments:
“This is a nostalgic album yet the universal themes of life, love and loss are eternal: beautifully composed, they are as relevant today as they were then.”
Since 2003, Jeannette Byrne has sold out shows at The Festival of World Cultures, The Sugar Club and The Helix in Dublin, the Wexford Music Festival, as well as putting on shows at The National Concert Hall in Dublin. She plans to come to London for a UK launch of her album in March 2020.
A long time performer of the French Chanson, Jeannette has a list of performances and recordings to her credit, spanning 25 years. Jeannette’s passion for this music originated from her French grandmother and has driven her to perform and record many of her favourites. Whether with an orchestra, a café band or simply a pianist, Jeannette always enthrals and enriches her audiences with astonishing renditions of these great songs.
Jeannette started her musical career during her teen years with a local band then became a solo performer: She studied theatre and performance and worked in production for a while: Her first solo show as performer and creator was Memories of Gershwin at the National Concert Hall in Dublin.
After some time in London and 2 sons later, she returned to Dublin and worked with a then “unknown” Jack L and the Black Romantics. Her recordings on the album WAX and her performances earned her instant critical acclaim.
1996: Her first EP Une Femme was voted one of the top five albums of the year by The Irish Times. With 2 tracks in French and 2 in English, this EP received a tremendous amount of radio play around Ireland.
1998: Her first album Elegy was a mixture of classic French songs and Gallic influenced compositions and was voted album of the month by Hot Press magazine. Jeannette visited Spain, France, Holland and Canada promoting the album. University radios picked it up across the United States and Canada and her music has been used in French culture courses here in Ireland and abroad.
2005: Her next album Café Diva was a celebration of 40 years or so of the best French music and featured some well known Irish players such as Paul Moore on Bass (Van Morrison), Steve Wickham on violin (The Waterboys) and others.
October 2013 saw the 50th Anniversary of the death of the legendary Edith Piaf: Jeannette wrote, produced & performed her own tribute to Piaf. The show entitled - PIAF “No Regrets” toured around Ireland in theatres between 2013 and 2015.
